An Interview With Dr. Savage, A Qualified Plastic Surgeon In Boston

Are there risks and complications to a breast lift surgery?

Most breast lifts or mastopexy are done safely as an outpatient procedure, but like any elective surgery occasionally complications can occur. The vast majority of lift patients heal nicely and are thrilled with their results, however like with other procedures one can develop an infection, develop some bleeding(almost never to the point of requiring a transfusion) or have bad scarring. The risk of complications go up in those who are smokers, are overweight or have other circulation problems like diabetes. There is also a higher complication rate in those having a simultaneous breast augmentation(implant) done at the same time. Other potential problems can include numbness, breast asymmetry, deformity or loss of tissue. It is important for patients therefore to be nicotine free for at least 4-6 weeks before surgery and to continue to abstain postoperatively. To try and achieve a reasonable weight preoperatively is also helpful. During your consultation, your board certified plastic surgeon should review all the possible risks with you and outline the different types of mastopexy available in 2010. Prior experience is crucial with this particular operation in order to achieve optimal results. Dr Robert Savage-bostonwellesleyplasticsurgery.com,781 263-7333

How long do the results last?

The patient, if healed properly, will always look better and less saggy than before the procedure. However, the breasts do continue to age, and time and gravity, in addition to hormonal changes will have an effect over tiime.

How much does breast lift surgery cost?

Costs vary from doctor to doctor, and also depending on where you live, e.g. New York City is usually more expensive than Boston. If a breast augmentation is done at the same time costs also increase. In MA a basic mastopexy costs $5000-7000 plus anesthesia and facility fees.

What are some of the most common benefits of breast lift surgery?

After a mastopexy the breasts are usually better shaped and less saggy. If moisture collects under the breast preoperatively this is usually also improved. The breasts look younger, perkier and attempt to duplicate the appearance prior to having children.
