1. What are some of the most common benefits of breast lift surgery?
The chief benefit of a breast lift is a better shape to your breasts. The breasts will not be sagging and will have a better overall shape. If an implant is added at the same time, there will be an increase in the size of the breast as well. In some women, there can be some degree of neck or back pain from the breasts being lower on the chest wall, and this can at times be improved as well. In addition, women who experience an improvement in the shape and/or size of their breasts frequently have a much improved body image. They seem to be more confident, and feel better about themselves overall.
2. What will happen at the initial consultation
During the initial consultation, you will meet with the surgeon and his staff. You will be examined and frequently pre-operative photographs will be taken (these are kept strictly confidential, as is all medical information). Your options in terms of the operation will be discussed, and you will be informed about the operation, your recovery, and possible risks of surgery. Since this operation is not covered by insurance, you will also be informed of the cost and any possible financing options.
3. How long does breast lift surgery take?
The operating time for this surgery is usually two to three hours.
4. Do I have to stay in the hospital?
This operation is almost always done as an outpatient either in a surgery center or through a hospital. If this is done with other surgeries requiring a longer anesthetic time, a one night stay in the hospital can be a possibility.
5. How much pain is there?
Pain is very subjective. There will always be some degree of pain or discomfort. However, in most cases this is not terribly severe. If implants are placed, and are placed beneath the chest muscle, there can be more pain. However, most patients do very well from a pain standpoint.
6. What can I expect after breast lift surgery?
What you can expect is a better overall shape to your breasts. You will get back into most of your normal activities relatively quickly, and will be pleased with how you look.
7. What is the longterm outcome like?
The long term outcome will depend upon several things: the size of your breasts, the kind of support you wear in your bra, any changes in your weight, and the quality or your skin.
Anyone can have sagging breasts again after the breast lift, because gravity has not gone away! And the larger the breasts are, the more gravity will affect them. The best way to guard against this is to wear good support in your bra during you daily life, and especially during exercise. The strength and elasticity of your skin and breast tissues will affect the longevity of the lift. Women who have had large changes in their weight frequently have lost a lot of skin elasticity. This is make the breasts a bit more prone to stretch out again. Unfortunately there is not much to be done about this.
Pregnancy can stretch the breasts out as well, and many women wish to wait on this until they have had all their children. Likewise, changes in your weight can affect the shape of your breasts.
But if your weight is maintained, and you wear good support in your bra, you should have a good long term result.
