An Interview With Dr. Valentini, A Qualified Plastic Surgeon In Clarksville

What is the recovery period like?

Recovery from a breast lift procedure with or without implants is relatively quick. Stitches remain for approximately 10 days and patient can resume normal activities then. Return to work, for a sedentary type of occupation, could be as early as 5 to 6 days. However, full exercise programs cannot be resumed before 3 weeks.

Who is an ideal candidate for breast lift surgery?

The best candidates for Breast Lift procedures are healthy, emotionally stable women who have realistic expectations about what this type of surgery can accomplish. Breasts of any size can be lifted, but the results will not last as long in women with very heavy and large breasts. Scars are present after the procedure and depending on the individual healing may be gradual, with the scars fading over a period of time.

What is Breast Lifting?

Breast Lift or mastopexy is a surgical procedure to raise and reshape sagging breast. This can be the result of pregnancies or extreme weight loss as well as aging and gravity which can produce changes in the appearance of a woman's breasts. When the skin loses its elasticity, the breast often lose their shape and begin to sag. This operation also reduces the size of the areola, the darker skin around the nipples.

How is breast lift surgery done?

This is an elective surgical operation performed as an outpatient in an office accredited surgical facility or surgicenter. Incisions are made around the areola, the crease below the breast and in-between in order to reshape the breast tissue. In some instances it is possible to do without the vertical incision. This is called a "doughnut mastopexy " or Benelli Procedure. Sometimes breasts implants are inserted at the same time to increase firmness and size of the breasts.

Are there risks and complications to a breast lift surgery?

As in any surgical procedure there is a certain amount of risks for complications such as bleeding, infection, changes in nipple sensation, excessive swelling or bruising and asymmetry as well as fluid accumulation between skin and underlying tissues following surgery, trauma or extreme exercise. Sometimes additional surgery may be required to improve results.
