What is Breast Lifting?
Breast lifting, also known as mastopexy, is a procedure that elevates the breasts and repositions the nipple and areola. It is sometimes combined with placement of breast implants. It is most commonly performed in women who have had one or more children and are bothered by sagging of their breasts.
How is breast lift surgery done?
There are a few different types of breast lift procedures that I perform. No matter which type the patient chooses, they usually have some type of anesthesia (sedation or general anesthesia). In all breast lift procedures excess skin is removed. In most cases, the nipple and areola are elevated. This does not necessitate removal of the nipple and replacement as a skin graft. Instead, the nipple and areola are kept attached to the breast tissue underneath them. Most breast lifts are performed using incisions that go around the areola as well as from the bottom of the areola to the bottom of the breast. This is sometimes called a "lollipop incision " because of its shape. Sometimes, an incision is also made in the crease below the breast (Inframammary fold). If the patient desires additional fullness and a larger cup size, then an implant may be inserted at the same time.
