An Interview With Dr. Amy Wandel MD , A Qualified Plastic Surgeon For Moms In Folsom

1. What are some of the most common benefits of breast lift surgery?

Women' s breasts sag over time due to weight of the breast. Other causes for "droopy breasts" are deflation of the breast after breast feeding, weight loss or hormonal changes. Breast lift surgery is performed to remove extra skin from the breast and to reshape the breast and lift it back to a more youthful position on the woman' s chest.

2. What will happen at the initial consultation?

During the initial consult the plastic surgeon will examine the patient and take a history. The surgeon and the patient will discuss what the patient is looking for and what does she want her breasts to look like when she is done. At this appointment the plastic surgeon may also go over the risks of surgery, where the scar(s) will be and what to expect during the recovery phase.

3. How long does breast lift surgery take?

The surgery can take anywhere from 1.5hrs to 3hrs depending on what needs to be done.

4. Do I have to stay in the hospital?

The surgery itself is usually an outpatient procedure.

5. How much pain is there?

Most patients have some pain for two weeks. This pain is of course worse the first week but is controlled with oral pain medication. By the second week most patients have little to no pain.

6. What can I expect after breast lift surgery?

The recovery period lasts anywhere from 3 weeks to 8 weeks. During the initial two weeks the woman should refrain from bouncing activities and any strenuous exercise. From 2-4 weeks the woman can slowly increase her activity level but should not run, jump or do impact sports. At 4-6 weeks most patients can start running (or doing impact sports). Breast lift surgery results in perkier breasts. They should be fuller in the upper portion of the breast (can be bigger if the patient has chosen to use an implant).

7. What is the longterm outcome like?

Long term most woman do see a drop in their breasts but it is gradual and they maintain a nice shape.
