An Interview With Dr. Jonathan Ross Berman, MD, FACS, A Qualified Plastic Surgeon In Fort Lauderdale

1. What are some of the most common benefits of breast lift surgery?

Most women request breast lift surgery because their breasts become saggy. Often after childbearing, the breast involutes and the breast tissue decreases in mass and the skin envelope remains the same size. This disproportion leads to a longer droopy breast where the nipple often points towards the floor. The upper pole begins to look flat and the breast itself takes on a snoopy dog appearance. Women often feel that there is a loss of volume and their once perky small breast has increased in length and decreased in volume. Gravity also plays a role tending to pull the breast downward. Many women who undergo breast lift surgery are pleased with their surgical results because the excess skin and droopy nipple are returned to a more youthful state. The women find they have achieved a more youthful and perky appearance to their breasts.

2. What will happen at the initial consultation ?

At the initial consultation like any consultation the patient meets me and discusses why they are at the consultation: what they want and what they want to achieve. A physical examination is performed. A surgical plan is discussed after the physical examination. There are different breast lift surgeries. The one best suited for the patient is presented. Photographs of previous patients who have had similar operations are shown. A discusssion of the fees for the recommended procedure is given by my patient care coordinator. Often, a surgical date is scheduled at the original consultation.

3. How long does breast lift surgery take?

The length of surgery is dependent on the extent of breast lift surgery that is necessary to achieve the patient’s goals. The more the breast needs to be lifted, the longer the surgery. Most breast lift surgeries take between 1 1/2 to 3 hours.

4. Do I have to stay in the hospital?

I have an in-office surgical suite and most mastopexy surgeries are performed in our office suite.

5. How much pain is there?

Interestingly, patients have very litte pain.

6. What can I expect after breast lift surgery ?

The recuperation following breast lift surgery is often quite easy. A few days of rest and relaxation is often all that is required. Absorbable sutures are used so that there are no sutures that need to be removed. A supportive bras is often all that is required.

7. What is the longterm outcome like ?

The long term outcome is excellent. Women that undergo mastopexy are usually very pleased by the results of their surgery and often comment that it was a very easy procedure for them.
