An Interview With Dr. Richard T Ethridge,MD, PhD, A Qualified Plastic Surgeon In Fort Worth

1. What is the most common benefit of breast lift surgery?

The primary benefit of a breast lift (mastopexy) is improved self-image. Sagging of the breast occurs naturally as the skin loses its elasticity, usually due to aging, changes following pregnancy or breastfeeding, or weight loss. Women who wish to restore their breasts to a more youthful appearance may find a breast lift extremely appealing.

2. What will happen at the initial consultation if I’m considering a breast lift?

Your surgeon will talk to you about your goals and expectations. Do you have concerns about the surgery? This is the time to ask questions. I recommend finding a surgeon that listens to your goals and spends enough time with you to ensure that you are comfortable with your plan.

3. How long does breast lift surgery usually take?

The procedure takes about two to three hours.

4. Does a breast lift require a hospital stay?

No, mastopexy is generally an outpatient procedure.

5. What about pain?

As with any surgical procedure, patients may experience temporary swelling, bruising, and soreness in the procedure location. Following a breast lift procedure, pain is managed with prescription medication, and most pain subsides within a week or two of surgery.

6. What can I expect after breast lift surgery?

The final results of a breast lift will usually be visible approximately one to two months after the procedure. Patients who undergo breast lift surgery generally may return to work one week after the procedure. More strenuous activity should be avoided until two to three weeks following surgery.

7. What is the longterm outlook?

The duration of successful breast lift results can vary and often depends on the elasticity of each individual’s skin.
