An Interview With Dr. Robert Kearney, A Qualified Plastic Surgeon In La Jolla

1. How Does a Breast Lift Work?

A breast lift would be better termed a nipple lift, as it repositions the nipple areolar complex higher on the breast mound and removes some of the breast skin at the same time. The desired outcome is to give the breast a nicer appearance. An implant is often inserted at the same time to give back the fullness to the upper pole of the breast.

2. When Is the Best Time for a Breast Lift?

A breast lift can be done at any time but is best done when the patient is at a stable weight, is at least six to nine months postpartum and has not breast fed for several months.

3. Are the results from a breast lift permanent?

Breast lifts are seldom redone so in that sense they are permanent. If there is a large change in weight (up or down) then it is possible but usually once the skin envelope has been tightened it will hold. In a small number of patients a minor revision may be necessary years later to remove some more excess skin below the nipple but a new lift is not usually necessary.

4. Where will the surgery most likely take place?

The surgery is best done under general anesthesia at an outpatient surgery center.

5. When can I return to work and strenuous activity?

I usually try to have the patient take it easy for a few days, not resume any heavy lifting for 2 to 4 weeks but they can resume light aerobic activity as tolerated after a few days.

6. Is it possible to have my insurance cover my breast lift surgery?

This procedure is not covered by insurance.

7. Will I require any blood transfusions during breast lift surgery?

I have never seen a patient require a blood transfusion for a breast lift.
