Are there risks and complications to a breast lift surgery?
All surgeries have inherent risks and breast lift surgery is no different. Most significant risks include, bleeding, infection, wound healing complications, loss of sensation, inability to breastfeed, changes in appearance of the nipples and areolas, loss of the nipples and areolas, poor scarring and recurrent sagging.
How long do the results last?
As all women know, gravity pulls everything downward - the breasts are no different. Without a good support bra, women can expect their breasts to begin sagging within months to years of surgery. Major changes in weight or additional pregnancies can also undo the results of surgery. Under optimal conditions, however, women can expect the results to last for many years.
What is the recovery period like?
Most patients miss between 1-2 weeks of work and are asked to refrain from strenuous activity for 4-6 weeks after surgery. Most patients require narcotic pain medications for just a few days after the procedure.
How is breast lift surgery done?
Breast lift surgery (mastopexy) is done my making incisions around the areola, and often times, making a vertical incision that extends from the areola to the breast crease in the shape of a lollipop. In some cases, when there is a significant amount of excess skin and the nipple is particularly droopy, an incision needs to be made in the crease at the base of the breast as well (anchor pattern). Through these incisions, breast tissue is repositioned and tightened, placing it preferentially in the upper pole of the breast. The incisions are then closed with absorbable sutures placed below the skin, in an attempt to give the patient the best possible scars.
Who is an ideal candidate for breast lift surgery?
The best candidates have sagging breasts, have lost shape or size from their breasts, have long and hanging breasts, have breast skin and areolas that are stretched, have downward pointing nipples, or have significant breast asymmetry.
What is Breast Lifting?
A breast lift, otherwise known as a mastopexy, rejuvenates and lifts the breasts by excising extra skin and tightening supporting tissues to achieve a more youthful contour and shape. Breast lifts also reposition and reduce the size of the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple) which may have stretched or drooped.
