An Interview With Dr. Lawrence Foster, M.D. , A Qualified Plastic Surgeon For Moms In Sacramento

1. What should I expect during the surgery?

You will be asleep, and when you wake up there is no pain. When the bandages come off, which is usually pretty minimal, just several layers of gauze, that would be like a folded over Kleenex, the breast will appear just the way they were before the first pregnancy. There is minimal discomfort because the breast lift surgery is skin-only surgery. Lot of people do not take any painkillers at all, or they may take 1 or 2 during the first 24 hours, and after that they do not think they need anymore.

2. Is it possible to increase or decrease my breast size during surgery?

Yes, of course. That is what we do with breast implants, we increase the breast size. And that is what we do with breast reduction, we decrease the breast size. Usually, breast lift does not change the breast size, it just changes the breast shape. Basically that is what a breast lift is. It is like a skin brassier that holds your skin up.

3. Can exercise tighten the skin without Breast lift?

No. Unfortunately, the more you exercise, the more you lose weight, and the looser the skin gets. Exercise is an important part of your health and longevity, but you need to get a minimum amount of it. And the older you get the lower that minimum is.

4. Will Breast lift tighten up loose skin?

It can change your EE size skin brassier to B or C size. It is just like if you take your EE size bra to the tailor and ask him to cut it down to size B or C. It is exactly same that we do in the breast lift procedure.

5. Can the nipple sense of touch be lost from a mastopexy?

The answer is No. Mastopexy does not affect the nipple, it only tightens the skin around the nipple. Even though a circular incision is made around the nipple. But the nipple is not undermined, it is not taken off, it is not changed in any way whatsoever. As a matter of fact, more commonly the nipple is a little more sensitive than normal in the first few weeks after the surgery, because it is up there, sticking into the bra, and rubbing a little more than it is used to. It is quite like when you get a new pair of shoes, and you get sore feet till the feet toughen up. The same is the case with the nipple. Pretty soon it gets used to its new place in the brassier, and is no longer sensitive anymore.

6. What are the techniques of Breast lift and Where are the scars after Breast lift?

There are 4 different kinds of breast lift. If it is only a nipple lift, there is a half circle scar over the top of the areola. That is the junction between the dark skin and the light skin. The next stage is the lollipop lift. The skin beneath the nipple is removed and tightened up. The scar winds up in exactly the shape of a lollipop. If it is a circular breast lift, we make a dough nut incision around the nipple, and excise all the loose skin and bring the big circle down to the small circle. The grand-daddy of all breast lifts is the anchor mastopexy. The scar is in the shape of an anchor. It is circular around the areola. Saggy breasts that had the nipples down below the waist, require an anchor scar. The scar is then closed by an expert. There are 4 layers of sutures that hold the scar together. The scar will stay as thin as a thread. And it actually totally disappears within 6 or 7 months. It requires an expert to achieve this. So you have to be careful when you choose your surgeon for breast lift.
