An Interview With Dr. Miller, A Qualified Plastic Surgeon In Tulsa

What is Breast Lifting?

The fancy word for breast lifting is MASTOPEXY. This is a combination of two old words that mean repair of the breast. The procedure is done to restore breasts to a more youthful shape and feel. It is done by drawing a pattern on the breast, and then removing the extra skin that has resulted from aging or pregnancy, and this results in a tightening of the skin, firming up breast tissue and then raising the breast to a higher, more youthful position. Occasionally, even younger women have breasts that are ptotic, and they want a more firm and higher breast, and this can be done for them also.

What is the recovery period like?

The recovery is usually about 4 days in length, but complete healing takes at least one month. Most healing times are uneventful, but occasionally, skin edges can separate, and prolong the healing time. One simply needs to keep the skin edges clean, and cover with a moist dressing. Once the edges are healed, then scar revisions can be done if necessary. Most doctors use steri strips a sort of small band aid to place on the skin and help the wound heal. They may also choose to use the skin glue. But, what must be remembered is that activity must be at a minimum, and to avoid taking caffeine, chocolate, tea and avoid all cigarette smoke. Do not use any tobacco products yourself for at least two weeks before, and two weeks after surgery.

How is breast lift surgery done?

Many surgeons choose to have the patient undergo anesthesia, so that she will be comfortable during the entire procedure as it can take up to three hours to do a large lift. There is a standard pattern that is drawn on the breast while the patient is awake, alert and can stand up. Once asleep, then the surgeon carefully follows the pattern and removes the skin above and below the nipple allowing the breast to be raised into its newer postion. Then many stitches are placed under the skin to close the incisions. These sutures are under the skin, so scarring is minimized. There is minimal pain after the surgery, and most can go back to work in 2 or 3 days as long as the work does not involve strenuous activities such as a waitress, hair stylist, postal delivery, stocking, etc.
